The Citadel Writing and Learning Center Mission:

  • Enhancement of writing skills,
  • Development of learning strategies,
  • Enhancement of math skills,
  • Enhancement of reading skills,
  • Improvement of academic performance in all content areas, and
  • Continued emphasis on retention in the Citadel community.

Special attention is given to the writing, learning, reading, and other academic skills of first-year and sophomore students, who attend individual tutorials and group workshops; however, upperclassmen and graduate students have equal access to all programs.

In addition to individual and group tutorials held in the Writing and Learning Center:

  • The writing staff conducts requested workshops for classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level;
  • The learning strategies staff presents two workshops in each Citadel 101 class during   the fall semester;
  • The math tutorials are available during the day as well as five evenings during fall and spring semesters;
  • The reading specialist works individually with students as well as with small groups;
  •  Individual and group content tutorials are held in mathematics, sciences, and foreign languages;
  • The learning staff monitors Study Sessions for Athletes, Study Sessions for Tours, and the Mandatory Study Period program (MSP) for at-risk freshmen and sophomores.
In sponsoring these enrichment activities and in all other areas, the Center assures that its efforts are in concert with the objectives of the academic departments, the Quality Enhancement Plan of the college, and the mission statement of The Citadel.
